Taming the Twin: Single-Engine Operations
Whether you’re new to multiengine flying or multiengine rated but rusty, become a better, safer pilot with the AOPA Air Safety Institute’s Taming the Twin video series. These videos, in collaboration with Sporty’s, cover the fundamentals that are key to mastering multiengine flying.
Flying a multiengine airplane when one engine has failed requires a deep understanding of how to maintain aircraft control and performance. Single-Engine Operations examines the relationship between the airplane’s controllability and performance, and why controllability is paramount for safety during single-engine operations.
The series’ remaining videos are scheduled to be released one at a time in the upcomin...

Most people here were short winded.. I could be to and just call the CFI a co-conspiritor to manslaughter.. I could cite all sorts of holes in flight training programs.. Ala.. The new dawg "CFI's" teaching puppies.. (repeat) The one person who is almost as guilty as the pic, is the soul survivor.. THIS is a flaw in the training system., IMO. They've tried to clean it up with ATP flight deck attitudes / power struggles.. Back on point: The one person other than the passengers who should have at the very least, NOT flown and argued for the passengers not to do as well....... DID NOT.. I could fly and land both rotary and fixed before I ever got licensed thanks to having friends who owned both.. Never solo.. Just the experience.. I thought I'd go ahead and get licensed.. I fired TWO different flight schools for putting me with two different "CFIs" who were essentially learning at my own expense.. This is NOT a ego thing.. Oh, NO.. This is a business model where they are pushing new pilots through the process to commercial, and CFI, so THEY can teach new pilots to build hours.. Old news to older salts, I am sure.. However, already being successful, and not having starry eyes just to get in the air on the way to ATP? (etc).. I was not that person.. And, when I addressed it with the owner of Austin Academy of Aeronautics, and a number of other things.. I was refused a different "instructor".. I could write an in depth article on this.. I am a man with resources, and I was then as well, and most importantly, experiences.. A "CFI" (I say that in quotes because it is just a rating people skid their way into - doesn't make anyone a good instructor).. IF this guy is still in the aviation business, I hope you never forget what you could have stopped.. Passengers get away with "trust me flights" all the time, because they have no idea about even the fundamentals.. Even if this CFI somehow missed ALL of the warnings from the locals, who KNEW/KNOW far more about the conditions, taking off with the wind? What possibly could go wrong? A new young r/c airplane pilot even knows this..

Rather have a type 2 or a type 3 helicopter dipping close by that be waiting on a water scooping plane going back in forth from the lake. The helicopter puts water right where you need it. Plane off as often as its on the fireline. The Fire Boss and CL 215 seldom outdo helicopters on initial attack.

I have had opportunity to declare an emergency twice. ATC was extremely helpful on both occasions and I only received a call from the FAA on one of them. It was not bc of anything I did wrong, but for them to gather information in case there was a more general issue in aviation that other pilots or mechanics needed to be aware of.

I assume every pilot has a plan for this on takeoff, with a general plan in several circumstances when experiencing an engine failure? why the insistence on making the runway? any open field of grass in a mostly wide open grassy area that is many airports is certainly better than a stall into the ground....

A minor yet significant tidbit: The controller should have corrected the Cirrus when he said "cleared for the intercept". In reality, he'd been cleared for the ILS approach to 21. That might have reinforced his situational awareness and kept him from blowing through the localizer. Who knows.

I wonder how much fatigue played a role in this. They had done over five hours of flying, spent 4 hours on the ground, and had potentially several hours to get to Des Moines. I don't make the best decisions after five hours in a car followed by needing to get back in the car a few hours later. With such unfavorable density altitude in the mountains, it would have been wiser to spend the night in Aspen and leave early morning with a clear head and cooler temperatures.

This is multiple controller F ups, she stayed calm the whole time, the tower controllers needed to talk to the approach controller to make space to fit her in, or hand her off to approach . Eventually she probably became frustrated and overwhelmed which lead to a critical mistake.

Complacency has no place in the air or at sea which is more my environment. We fly or float solely because of our geometry. Minor variations of our geometry and we cease to do either. Both environments are capable of editing our carefully constructed geometry on a whim. 😢
